WINTER 2024

Spring Batik and Watercolor Scarves

​

  • Come spend 2 lovely afternoons creating your own beautiful and shimmering scarves! We will apply hot soy wax resist to create lines and patterns and then hand-paint vibrant fabric dyes to 8" x 54" 100% Habotai silk scarves and watch our spring scarves bloom with color. Students can create 5 scarves in the Saturday class using batik technique, as well as watercolor painting and salt effects! There will be a 30 minute lunch break and students can bring food/drink. On Sunday students set the dyes and remove batik wax. Students are encouraged to bring a clothes iron from home on Sunday.  NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. All materials are included in the Materials Fee of $50, PAYABLE TO INSTRUCTOR at workshop.  Registration deadline- 2 weeks before workshop.

TRANSFORM YOUR SCRAP- CASTING AND ROLLING INGOTS

​

  • Come have an exciting time in the studio playing with fire and learning how to turn your clean sterling silver scrap into workable sheet and wire ready for your next jewelry project. Students will melt their sterling silver scrap, with added sterling silver casting grain, in a crucible and pour into both sheet and wire steel ingots molds. Then, students will roll and roll and draw the ingots into workable gauges and profiles. Saturday we will pour metal and Sunday we will roll and draw. On Sunday, two sheet and two wire rolling mills will be in the classroom and the class time will be split into 2 groups of 4 students. This class has a 8 student maximum. NOTE: Rolling sheet and drawing wire is a continuous and strenuous activity. PREREQUISITE: 3 Jewelry/Metalsmithing classes or permission of the instructor. See the Supply List at www.spruillarts.org for further information regarding preparing your scrap, casting grain cost and information needed for workshop. Registration cut-off two weeks prior to the first day of class.

HOLLOW RINGS 

 

  • Come discover the versatility and dimensional possibilities of hollow constructed rings! Fabricated with flat sheet, these special rings are great for special techniques, sculptural exploration, and and multiple surfaces to consider with texture, pattern, stone settings, and appliques. An info-packed workshop and students will work on their own hollow ring.

FLUSH SETTING ONE-DAY WORKSHOP

​

  • Add a beautiful setting technique to your jewelry designs! Flush setting is a clean and modern stone setting technique where a faceted stone is set into the metal's surface without the need for bezels, tubes or prongs. Students will learn setting parameters, fabrication requirements, how to make setting tools, setting round faceted stones, and clean-up. $35 to instructor for materials.

HOLIDAY INDIGO SHIBORI AND FUROSHIKI WRAPPING

 

  • Come discover the world of shibori resist combined with the magic of indigo dyeing to create beautiful large 100% cotton "bandanas" that are beautiful practical gifts and can also be used to wrap holiday gifts too! Students will have the opportunity to learn several different ways to create striking patterns in white using the fabric combined with folding, stitching, wood clamping, and wrapping then dip-dyeing in a traditional indigo vat for a rich blue contrast. The reduction strikes and transforms after the fabric is removed from the vat and exposed to oxygen. Saturday we will be dyeing up to 8 bandanas. Then Sunday we will do the final rinse, iron and learn about furoshiki, japanese wrapping cloths. Students will have the opportunity to add embellishments like beading, stitching, and ribbons!

Earrings!- Fun one-day jewelry introduction

Salt Silk Scarves- Handmade Holidays

 

  • Come relax and create beautiful and luxurious gifts, for yourself and your special someone(s). Students will hand-dye four 8" x 52" 100% Habotai silk shimmering scarves by applying vibrant transparent silk dyes with the addition of rock salt, ice and other resists to create one-of-a-kind watercolor effects, textures and patterns. All silk scarves will be prepped by Joanne- scoured, ironed and mounted so you have a fun weekend discovering the joy of silk dyeing without the extra time and investment! Brooch Revival Series: Broaching Radial Symmetry

#3 in series of 3 workshops

 

  • Come and get swept away by the lovely symmetry of flower petals in this workshop creating your own floral branch brooch! We will apply basic jewelry and metalsmithing skills such as forging, piercing and stone setting to sheet, wire, pre-made bezel cups and miniature screws, and enjoy a fun way to use a traditional cold connection. By combining basic soldering and cold connections students will discover the ability to create visually complicated designs without advanced soldering skills, without screw heads visible, and with ultimate control over metal color and finish. This project can open up a "world of possibilities" for each student- the art of brooches, a dynamic construction technique and the color of metal.

Bevy of Bezels workshop

 

  • In this information-rich workshop, learn all the aspects of fabricating bezel settings for simple to unusual shaped cabochons, finished enamels, alternative materials, and found objects. Students will learn to fuse fine silver bezel strip, allowing for cleaner settings while avoiding the removal of frustrating bezel wall solder seams. Topics include object parameters, structural and soldering considerations, design and setting possibilities for creating more personalized jewelry. Students will be able to complete at least one finished bezel jewelry piece.

  • In this fun and focused workshop, discover the world of reverse bezels. These great bezel settings will offer more design options and a way to set stones in an open modern way in your jewelry making. Introduction to Torch-fired Enamels

 

  • Come have fun and discover the color, pattern and texture of torch-fired enameling. We will learn the basics of glass on metal with both opaque and transparent enamels applied by sifting and wet application. We will create design and pattern with stencils, foils, textured metal, stringers, and glass seed beads. Students will make several pairs of earrings and/or pendant/centerpieces. Materials are included in the Materials Kit Fee of approximately $40.00 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop.

Don't Fear the Mini-Torch

 

Come get comfortable with and discover what the mini-torch can do for your jewelry designs. Although not a standard soldering torch for silver, the high heat mini-torch allows us to achieve fun and specialized techniques by both melting and soldering. Students will learn oxy/fuel torch basics and safety, as well as utilize these new techniques to create a necklace. Materials are included in the Materials Kit Fee of approx. $20.00 PAYABLE TO THE INSTRUCTOR at the time of the workshop.

GREAT IMPRESSIONS- EMBOSSING AND THE HYDRAULIC PRESS

  • Come and discover the visual excitement you can add to your work with the dramatic surface topography created with embossing and the hydraulic press. Learn how to create undulating surfaces with raised patterns and textures, lines, silhouettes and stepped movements in sheet by making recesses, pierced vacancies, wire designs and created forms using sheet, wire and plastic. Students will learn proper use, parameters and important safety information regarding the hydraulic press and the specifics of both manufactured plates and created dies. The possibilities of form and design, fabrication, soldering and contrasting surfaces will be discussed. This class has a 10 student maximum. SHADOW WORK: SILHOUETTE DIES, VOLUME, AND THE HYDRAULIC PRESS

  • Come and discover the beautiful drama you can add to your work with the pillow forms created with silhouette dies and the hydraulic press. Die-formed pieces can add both concave and convex spaces to designs, as well as create hollow forms such as beads and small vessels. We will spend 2 days exploring the possibilities of both manufactured steel and plastic silhouette dies and how to create custom dies. Students will learn proper use, parameters and important safety information regarding the hydraulic press and the specifics of silhouette/matrix dies. Form and design through textures, fabrication, soldering, and the possibilities of filling space will be fully discussed. This class has a 10 student maximum. Moving Metals:

 

  • Discover the majesty of old world traditional metalsmithing to create flatware, jewelry, sculptural and functional hollow ware. Beginning students will experience the fundamentals and joy of hammers and hammering with direct contact with metal. Intermediates will deepen and build upon basic skills and focus on craftsmanship and their artistic voice. Advanced students will be able to expand their concepts and techniques and soldering skills for more complex constructions, and are encouraged to pursue their own work/designs with instructor guidance.

Drawing on Jewelry- ages 12 to 112

  • Come and have fun creating your own original artwork to showcase in a pendant! We will apply our original drawings, color-filled rubber stamped or traced images directly onto thermoplastic sheets, which will be heated and shrunk to 60% in size. These detailed miniature artworks will be filed to shaped and permanently adhered into 2 silver-plated pendants, bead dangles added, and hung on necklaces, creating colorful and personal jewelry. No drawing experience needed! All materials are included.

Mokume Gane:

  • Discover the ancient Japanese technique mokume-gane, or "wood-grain" metal. Sheets of silver, gold, copper, brass and Japanese alloys are fused into a solid block (billet) of alternating layers of colored metals which is then gouged, punched and manipulated bringing out stunning patterns in the metal surface. Introduction to history, Japanese alloys, and the concepts behind billet making are presented. We will be working with commercially-made billets and rods, which allow us to add pattern & color to our designs without the extra time and expense of billet-making. Class focus is on patterning techniques and surface finishing, including polishing, etching and patinas to enhance color/contrast. Soldering considerations will be discussed. Great hands-on workshop.

By combining basic soldering and cold connections students will discover the ability to create visually complicated designs without advanced soldering skills, without rivets or screwheads visible, and with ultimate control over metal color and finish. This project can open up a "world of possibilities" for each student- the art of brooches, a dynamic design and construction technique and the color of metal.

Come and have fun in this fast-paced workshop creating your own simple but dynamic brooch! We will apply basic jewelry and metalsmithing skills such as texturing, piercing and soldering to create a tab setting in a pin silhouette. While creating our own colorful enamel centerpiece, we will learn enameling basics, such as sifting color and applying "stringers" & glass seed beads to create line, shape and pattern. Students will have the opportunity to create several enamel centerpieces, and choose their favorite for final setting. This project can open up a "world of possibilities" for each student - the art of brooches, a new setting technique and the color of enamel.

Forged Earrings

 

  • Spend a great weekend discovering the dynamic possibilities in beautifully fluid forged earring forms and the techniques used to create them. We will learn how to taper wire by both hammer and wire rolling mill and and learn how to create planes and transitions with both radiating and directional forging. Students will be able to complete 2 pairs of earrings with lots of hands-on practice and demos.

New Year, New You: Cold-connected Pendant

 

  • Come experience what Jewelry Making is all about in this great one day hands-on workshop. You will explore the basics of surface patterning, cutting and cold-connecting with rivets while creating and completing a great silver pendant. Students can choose artwork to capture in their pendant in class or can bring their own to fit inside an approx. 3/4" opening. Necklace provided!
